The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is one of the most venerated and culturally significant landmarks in Sri Lanka. Nestled in the heart of Kandy, this sacred Buddhist temple houses what is believed to be the left upper canine tooth of Lord Buddha, a relic that has played a pivotal role in the island's history and spirituality. According to ancient tradition, whoever holds the Tooth Relic holds the right to rule the island. For centuries, the relic was safeguarded by kings and became a powerful symbol of sovereignty and legitimacy. Today, the temple continues to serve as a spiritual center for Buddhists across the world and a cultural crown jewel of Sri Lanka.

The temple complex is an exquisite example of Kandyan architecture, adorned with intricate wood carvings, golden roofs, and beautifully painted walls. At its heart lies the inner sanctum where the Tooth Relic is enshrined in a golden casket shaped like a stupa. Though the relic itself is rarely seen, rituals and ceremonies are conducted daily to honor it.

Visitors can witness the “Thevava”—a sacred ritual held three times a day (morning, noon, and evening), featuring traditional drumming and offerings. The temple is often filled with the aroma of lotus flowers and incense, creating a deeply serene and spiritual atmosphere. Every year in July or August, the Kandy Esala Perahera—one of the oldest and grandest Buddhist festivals in the world—is held to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic. The streets of Kandy come alive with processions of elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, fire performers, and torchbearers, drawing thousands of locals and tourists alike. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the Temple of the Tooth is not just a religious destination but also a cultural treasure trove. It stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and enduring spiritual traditions.
